Video analytics can be thought of as the natural progression of CCTV. Whilst CCTV just records, Video Analytics can be used to identify and work out what is happening on the screen. The CCTV feed is passed through computer algorithms which assess what is happening on the screen. As the technology has progressed, it is now possible for different scenarios and incidents to analysed, and then flagged as needing attention. These sophisticated monitoring systems can be used to tell the difference between types of behaviour such as aggressive behaviour outside a nightclub and people talking, people being where they shouldn't be in an airport, or somebody acting suspiciously in a shopping centre.

The data provided can be tagged so that it can be referred to in the future. The tagging can be very basic such as just the time and date, and the length of the event. Or alternatively, it can be much more detailed, and identify the person, and the location. This helps to monitor known trouble makers, or perhaps those that cause trouble on a regular basis, and can make the job of the security staff and the police much easier.

As the data is tagged, it can be searched. This means that certain events, locations or people can be searched for. People can be tracked accurately over different cameras, and in different locations. This technology can be used for monitoring building security, and to help identify people who are trying to get in or get out of a building, or are in an area where they have no business being.

Another use of this technology is for crowd detection. This allows those monitoring the footage to be made aware of situations before they escalate into trouble or violence. Crowd detection is ideal for use at sporting events, demonstrations or in shopping centre. Face recognition technology means that people can be identified and watched closely so that there behaviour can be monitored before they can cause any disruption. This is a good way of monitoring known football hooligans on their way to the game, or known shoplifters as they walk through a shopping centre. In addition, this can also be used for security in buildings or to monitor building perimeters.

Video analytics can also be used to monitor objects as well as people. This makes distinguishing between objects that have been left behind, and suspicious packages easier. Thanks to this technology, it is easier to detect whether the package is a bag of shopping that a passenger has forgotten, or a potential suspicious package.

Large buildings and surrounding areas can be monitored more efficiently, and helps to reduce the risk of something significant being missed. This makes the technology ideal for using in busy places, such as airports, stations, shopping centres and busy streets. Companies can also make use of the technology for the security and safety of their employees.

This technology can be used to detect incidents and the build up to incidents before they happen. This can be based on a number of criteria, such as combinations of events happening, somebody being in a certain place at a certain time, or a known person appearing on screen.
